An advocate is someone who speaks up for another person or acts on behalf of another person. As a parent, being an advocate for your child is one of the most important roles you will ever have. But you won't do it alone; parent advocates typically rely on teachers, administrators, coaches, health care practitioners and others to help support their child's needs. These professionals are important members of your "team", and can use their expertise, connections and influence to help you get the services your child needs.
The bottom line is, if you don't advocate for your child, no one else will.
To be an effective advocate, start by joining in to:
- learn your rights and your child's rights
- connect with community resources and agencies
- network with other parents and advocacy groups
